How it works

x̄ = Σx / n

The sum is divided by the number of values. Use new lines or semicolons to separate values, so decimal commas remain unambiguous.

How the arithmetic mean is calculated

Add all numbers in the list and divide by the number of entries. Each entry has equal weight. You can separate entries with the separators supported by the input field.

Worked example

For the numbers 10, 20 and 30, the total is 60 and there are three values. The arithmetic mean is 60 ÷ 3 = 20.

Choosing the right kind of average

The arithmetic mean may be affected by extreme values. When observations represent different numbers of people, units or credits, a weighted average may be more appropriate. An empty list has no arithmetic mean.
