How it works
R = N × P / 100
Divide the percentage by 100 before multiplying. For relative change, the original value must be greater than zero.
How to calculate a percentage
To find P percent of N, multiply N by P and divide by 100. To calculate what percentage A is of B, divide A by B and multiply by 100; B must not be zero.
For percentage change, subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, and multiply by 100. A positive answer means an increase; a negative answer means a decrease.
Worked example
What is 15% of 2,500? Calculate 2,500 × 15 ÷ 100 = 375. If 375 is part of a total of 2,500, its share is 375 ÷ 2,500 × 100 = 15%.
Reading the answer and avoiding errors
The result for “percent of a number” has the same unit as the original number; a percentage share or change is expressed as %. A 20% increase followed by a 20% decrease does not restore the original value: 100 → 120 → 96.
A percentage change requires a nonzero starting value. To compare differences measured in percentage points, subtract the percentages directly instead of using relative percentage change.
